Fiambre on “Day of the Dead” (aka All Saints Day)

2 11 2011

The 1st of November in Guatemala is the Day of the Dead where many families visit cemeteries to spruce up tombstones of family members. In certain towns, people gather to fly kites, some as huge as 13 metres in diameter in order to connect the spirits of the dead.  We weren’t able to get to the kite flying, but we spent the day with our Guatemalan friends Christian and Karina and their family. We ate fiambre, a special dish eaten only on this day of the year. It is a cold dish with cooked vegetables mixed with beef and chicken and decorated with slices of cold meat and eggs. A huge mountain of a plate…very filling! The boys also had a fun time playing with all the children.
